Bicycle Ambulances in Nepal

Picture of a man riding a bicycle ambulance

In the remote flat plains of Nepal, poor village people are unable to reach medical care when they most need it. Practical Action has come up with a solution which is working really well.

Even the poorest families own a bicycle so Practical Action have been working with communities to design, build and use a two-wheeled trailer which acts as an ambulance. The two-wheeled trailer is made from moulded metal, with standard rubber-tyre wheels. The "bed" section can be padded with cushions to make the patient comfortable, while the "seat" section allows a family member to attend to patient during transit.

Plan of a bicycle ambulance

EVERESTMAX will be raising money specifically for this project. Not only does it rely upon the same mode of transport as the expedition, it also is being used in one of the countries that EVERESTMAX will travel through.

Typical costs of a bicycle:

  • One ambulance trailer = £70
  • Coil shock absorber spring = £25
  • Bicycle = £30
  • Trailer cover = £25

The EVERESTMAX team hope that as well as raising funds, their support will raise awareness of the good grass-root work that Practical Action is doing in partnership with these communities.
